Kalkaska County’s Materials Management Plan Committee (MMPC) is seeking community input about recycling and composting in Kalkaska County through an online public survey. Survey responses will be used to inform the creation of a new countywide materials management plan. In 2024, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) initiated the process for each county to prepare Materials Management Plans under legislation changes to Michigan Public Act 451, Part 115. These plans, which will replace the Solid Waste Plans, will focus on sustainable practices like recycling and composting, moving beyond traditional disposal methods. These plans are crucial and will assure proper management of all non-hazardous materials generated in your communities, establish guidelines for facility locations (like landfills, transfer stations, or composting sites), document existing and future infrastructure needs, and define community goals for a more sustainable approach to materials management. Kalkaska County’s Material Management Plan Committee (MMPC) advises and assists the county with its responsibilities to prepare, develop, and implement the Kalkaska County Materials Management Plan pursuant to Part 115. MMPC meetings are posted 10 days in advance. Scheduled meetings take place in the commissioner meeting room at the county office and are available via Zoom. The community input survey will be open April 15-July 31. The survey and more information can be found at www.bit.ly/kalkaskarecycle. 605 N Birch St Kalkaska, MI 49646 (231) 258-3300 www.kalkaskacounty.net April 27, 2026 Materials Management Plan Survey Scan this QR code with your phone’s camera to start the quick survey.
